Overview

Cafe East, nestled conveniently at 2920 Broadway in New York’s vibrant Columbia University neighborhood, offers a refreshing blend of casual dining and specialty beverages that make it a notable campus cafe. This spot caters primarily to students and faculty seeking a quick, flavorful bite or a satisfying drink break amid the hustle of academic life.

The menu centers around East Asian-inspired staples, with sushi and teriyaki chicken featuring prominently, alongside an impressive selection of bubble teas. The bubble tea, particularly praised by regulars, stands out for its authentic, well-balanced flavors and chewy boba pearls—delivered with just the right sweetness, avoiding any excessive sugariness common in other outlets. Drinks like oolong milk tea and chai boba tea bring nuanced herbal and creamy notes, catering well to both tea aficionados and casual drinkers alike.

Beyond the culinary offerings, Cafe East garners appreciation for its inviting atmosphere. Customers comment on the clean, modern interior, ideal for light meals or study sessions, although some suggest bringing an extra layer due to the cafe's cool air conditioning. The location near the Lerner Center adds convenience, positioning it as a popular stopover between classes or campus activities.

Service experiences vary—while most find staff efficient and the menu impressively diverse, there are occasional reports of less patient interactions and irregular opening hours, which may affect the overall visit. Still, the quality of food and drinks, combined with the ease of access at this Columbia hotspot, solidifies Cafe East as a go-to destination for those desiring authentic flavors without straying far from campus.

Whether you are drawn by the fresh sushi rolls, the robust and smooth bubble teas, or simply a cozy corner to recharge, Cafe East offers a balanced experience that reflects the dynamic spirit of New York’s university life. It’s particularly well-suited for students, faculty, and visitors who appreciate solid, affordable Asian-inspired fare and specialty tea crafted with care.

Nice atmosphere and interior to lounge at! Also located conveniently at the lerner center. Came here for the boba since we were here for a pre college program at Columbia. Very good boba and not too sweet! Grandiloquent and stupendous menu. I must say though… business must be very lucrative over here since the boba cost us around $8 (after tax). The cashier was also a bit audacious and impatient with us. The hours are also irregular since they don’t always open on schedule.

Cafe East is hands down the best dining option on Columbia’s campus. The menu features a variety of well-prepared dishes like sushi, teriyaki chicken, and other classic East Asian options. What really sets it apart is its surprisingly good boba tea—something you wouldn’t typically expect from a campus cafe. The tea is brewed just right—whether you go for classic milk tea or one of their fruit teas, the flavors are fresh and well-balanced, never too sweet or watered down. The boba itself has a perfect chewy texture that complements the drinks without overpowering them. It’s honestly the kind of quality you’d expect from a specialty boba shop, not a campus cafe. As for the sushi, it’s decent, especially considering the price—$10 for a roll is a great deal for a quick bite between classes. It’s nothing gourmet, but it gets the job done when you’re craving sushi on a budget. But if you’re stopping by Cafe East, the boba tea is the real highlight.

Cafe East is my FAVORITE place to go for a snack and study session. They are so speedy and always have the freshest sushi. Their froyo is SO good too. Egg tart is the best! Vanilla matcha is also so good. So clean too, just the AC is way too cold and you need to bring 3 layers.
